It can, but I would't send mail with that domain in the return address if I wanted it to be delivered. People do all sorts of silly things with mail domains but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. The .GT top level domain has had MX records pointing at Gmail for at least a decade, but as far as I can tell it has never worked.
