It is a very good idea for the HELO name to match the IP you're sending from, and for the rDNS to resolve back to the same name. It is not a great idea to send from a host with generic rDNS. As you have seen, you can sometimes get away with less, but if you want people to accept your mail, you want to look like a real mail server in control of the names it uses.
