I feel like in most cases this is something enabled by default that you can
disable when making your reservation.

This, too, I'm positive is something configurable within the confines of your
FedEx, etc, account.

Not reading thru account configuration and employing the tools provided, imo,
does not make their mail spam. Is it annoying that they opt you in
automatically vs letting you choose up front? Sure. Blame the slowest kid in
the class for that as people would do exactly as you're doing and not configure
the account the way they want it and end up not receiving the alerts and then
complain. This forces these vendors to default opt-in, sadly.

I entertain the same argument, btw, for those senders who pre-check the opt-in
box because, in the client's words, "people forget to check the box and then
miss our mail". Ok. But "people forget to UNcheck the box and now you've
literally created your own spam complaint" is my immediate response.

I've had veterinary clinics I do business with for my furry family members
employ third-party services for making appointments, purchasing Rx, etc. who
feel the need to send out a constant stream of mail *I* believe unhelpful. I
simply unsub (or close the account).
