It's not about them being added to the calendar automatically but rather receiving them in the first place. It's basically Spam that's very hard to block.
Judging over the past week, it seems either Google is dropping the ball or they are under some huge attack waves because I don't think we've ever received so much Spam from them, even the non-calendar type. If they do, then whatever software is handling your calendar, should have a similar setting. The message was not about filtering spam invites, it was *only* about preventing them (when they reach your inbox) from being automatically added to your calendar.
