I am on 10.5.5, "system webkit" not ticked, no Google App, standard
gmail.com account.

I have six different accounts, and the three that I normally used exhibits
this behaviour upon the very first login after installing this fresh version
(not the one that you've provided me the link for - I will try that a bit
later on when time is more generous to me :)

But I did remember a case whereby the Gmail authentication did show, but it
went away after two seconds - as you had noted.  However, this wasn't always
the case.
