Basically, my experiences have been similar to yours - but they aren't
always occurring (i.e. only randomly).
However, the problem doesn't show itself all the time... merely, it's just
those unexpected times that they like to play havoc on us users.

If you try using Gmail in Safari, are you able to reproduce these problems
as well?

And, coincidentally, I have the same config as you... gotta love the unibody
MBP! :)
