I had to open my gmail in Safari and click on the oflfine link there; that prompted me to install Gears, after which I had to restart Safari. After that, I had to go back to my gmail and click the link; this prompted me to grant Gears access to gmail. After I'd done that (twice: once for gmail and once for my google-apps address), I closed safari, opened mailplane, and *voila* syncing.
