DISAGREE! (Respectfully). The Mailplane implementation is superior in that, as stated above, typing ANY portion of the label finds it whereas Google's implementation requires typing from the beginning. Also, if you are reading a long message and have scrolled to where the label application button is not visible and then want to apply the label, hitting "l" doesn't open a box in your current view as does Mailplanethe, so the UI doesn't show the label selection dialog box (it's not floating as is Mailplane's).
The major advantage of the Google approach that Mailplane doesn't offer is the ability to, on the fly, add and apply a new label that doesn't currently exist.
