Same problem - I did uninstall and reinstall Gears on Safari 4 (because it was being crashy) but I still receive the gears upgrade notification in both Mailplane and Safari 4. Doubt this is a Mailplane problem. I'm assuming Mailplane uses the built-in webkit, which Safari 4 replaces.
