Did you only enable "Gmail Offline" for this account (the others are online
only)? If yes, then this is the reason why it doesn't load.
If you like to use "Gmail Offline" you'll need to downgrade. If you like to
use all accounts online only, then you can stay with Safari 4. Just go to
"Preferences/Advanced" and disable "Load Google Gears".
