I just upgraded to the 2.1.8 release and it seems to have helped the CPU a
bit, but not completely.  Not a conclusive analysis, but I've noticed the
CPU usage seems to go down to around 7% when I first switch to a different
account (1 gmail and 3 google apps total), then creeps up to 15-16% over the
span of a few minutes.  The memory usage doesn't spike upward, however, and
I think it holds steady throughout.  I'll keep a better eye on that and
report back if I find anything.

So perhaps another interesting data point, but still very much anecdotal.

Ruben, if you can't reproduce this on your end, I'm happy to try out test
builds for you to help track this down.
