I experience the same thing. It's because of the "undo" feature of gmail. Your email isn't actually sent until the "undo" time has transpired, and you can change this to 5 seconds, 10 seconds, or 20 seconds. If you disable this feature, the window will close immediately, otherwise you have to wait for the time to transpire, at which time mailplane is notified that the email was sent, and it will close the window.
