Google Labs has added a FANTASTIC new layout feature for Gmail, which adds a preview pane:
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-in-labs-preview-pane.html http://9to5google.com/2011/08/04/google-adds-tablet-like-preview-panes-to-gmail-inbox/ It makes Gmail quite a bit easier to navigate and use. It also seems to be pretty smart about how it marks a message as "read" (via a short period of time, or a double-click. If you just zip past it with keyboard navigation, it doesn't incorrectly mark a previewed message as read. I'm sold. The problem right now is that MailPlane has a few issues with it. Some keyboard shortcuts (like Command-/ to archive) don't work (but Gmail's built in "e" does.) I haven't had a chance to check all the others. I also had to turn off MailPlane's "Highlight Row in Overview" UI tweak feature as it was highlighting every line, not the whole conversation box. It looked odd and confusing. I'd love to see MailPlane be able to work fully with this new layout, if possible, with all the same keyboard shortcuts, and the row in overview being highlighted properly...
