I have a similar issue and am on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. In MailPlane prefs I have turned on spell checking.
In the menu in MailPlane, I am unable to select the "check spelling as you type". It may very well be selecting it, but no checkmark is put beside it, leaving no way to know the current state. I don't have the red underlines on words that are spelled wrong. I have had to resort to using Google's built in spell checking, which does not happen as I type, and most aggravatingly, can't learn new words or ignore as a group on the page. I suspect on a related note, I am also having issues with the built in Text Substitutions feature of Mac OS X not working in MailPlane, but working in other apps without trouble. You mentioned "Since I am on Lion"... Is it a known issue that there are spelling issues on Lion? Is there a list of compatibility issues with Lion and MailPlane I can reference? I was about to upgrade, perhaps today, but may hold off if MailPlane is not usable.
