I was just playing with it no less than 4 days ago. You can indeed get
GreaseKit installed, you can get the menu showing up in Safari or MailPlane.
This of course means you need to install SIMBL as well, which your results
may vary as for system stability after installing such a thing.

However, once it is installed, that is all your get. A trip to
userscripts.org will show you the source, where you can click "install, and
all you will see is the raw JS. You will not be prompted for an install.

Of course, you can track down where the JS files need to be stored, and
manually drop them in place. Doing so does no more than just stored the
file in a new place.

Apparently this is something that happened around Safari 5, where it all
broke. I would imagine that is the reason that things like NinjaKit, which
runs of the internal SafarI Extensions engine are becoming more popular.
There is at least one other method that is not SIMBL related.

If you have it working on Safari 5 in the current MailPlane, and could share
how you did so, I would be most appreciated.

If you read the comments here, I am unable to fine one, of perhaps 50's that
are in the same problem boat:
http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/11/14/how-to-run-greasemonkey-scripts-in-safari/

Here is some info on NinjaKit, my current favorite aside from the act that
the developer is Japanese (his pages are in Japanese and translation is not
the best in google translate) so I can't get a good feel for how serious he
is about the longevity of his project.
http://steeev.freehostia.com/wp/2010/07/19/new-extension-for-safari-5-called-ninjakit-lets-you-install-gm-scripts/

And I just ran into this CreamMonkey, which I will be trying soon. I just
hope it even shows up in MailPlane. Alas, it looks as though they are
taking a totally new direction, and scripts will need a rewrite. Not a huge
deal for the scripts I am interested in, I will just port them, or write my
own, but it will take some time for that community to gain traction.

As of now, I am thinking, if MailPlane wants to stay strong, embracing
Chrome is going to be where it is at. Chrome, supporting all the Mac,
Linux, and PC extensions, plug-in's, monkeys etc is going to be super
important. It will force MailPlane to really make their UI shine, their
menu system be rock solid, and their attachment and keyboard commands do
more than the built in, but that is, at it's core, what MailPlane is all
about.

If Chrome turns on Site Specific Browsing (SSB), and has segregated
preferences and window position, layout remembering, the game changes.
Those issues are the only thing stopping Prism from Mozilla, which makes a
SSB app for Chrome and FireFox, being something I can use. I could not deal
with resizing my window, turning off the url bar, etc, on every launch.

Just some food for thought for the MailPlane devs. Things are moving fast,
I really like this app, but Safari may drag it down. After all, it is a
shell to a browser, so it must shine in other areas. It can, and I am
confident it can do so well, but those features are on the horizon for free
in all browsers, in which case, MailPlane has to work on the UI and UX
solid, plus adding in bonus things. I hope they pull it off, as ever day I
use this app, I grow to like it a bit more.
