I just had the same problem for the first time. Mailplane 2.5.5(#1676), Safari 5.1.4, OS X 10.7.3. Choose file dialog appeared to work, but on clicking Open the dialog dismissed without any function. Saved the email as draft, went to GMail in Safari, opened the draft and made the attachment. GMail showed a progress bar as it uploaded the file, and all was OK. Looks like the Mailplane version doesn't impact the results.
