I just upgraded my system to:  

*Software*  OS X 10.8 (12A154q)

and receive that same connection error. I have reset gmail session. Made 
sure am logged out of /all/ other accounts.. still no go.

Even downloaded mailplane preview: 2.5.6-preview3 (#1681)
