We two ways to select message in Gmail:

The vertical bar, which works like a "focus". When you open a message,
it'll open the focused conversation. You can move this vertical bar using
Cmd-Arrow up/down or by pressing 'j' and 'k'.

Checkboxes: Used to perform archive/label etc.
- Click a check box to select it
- Shift-click a check box to extend the selection from the previously
selected check box
- click the checkbox to include/exclude it
- Use the '*' key to turn on the check box for conversations:

Tip: Press '?' to get all Gmail keyboard shortcuts.
