Just a follow up to say that this issue is now resolved for me. That is, drag-and-drop attachments now work perfectly with the new compose window and Mailplane 3.0 beta 587 (both for new messages and replies). I am not sure whether this is due to changes in Mailplane or on the google side (previously, dragging in a file had resulted in the open file dialog popping up, but this no longer occurs).
