Just a follow up to say that this issue is now resolved for me.  That is,
drag-and-drop attachments now work perfectly with the new compose window
and Mailplane 3.0 beta 587  (both for new messages and replies).  I am not
sure whether this is due to changes in Mailplane or on the google side
(previously, dragging in a file had resulted in the open file dialog
popping up, but this no longer occurs).
