Hi, You should still be able to edit contacts but Google made some changes recently which caused buttons not appearing properly anymore. We'd suggest going back to the old version of Google Contacts in the meantime.
I wrote to Mailplane support this morning and am also very upset that the edit is missing. I cannot find it anywhere… I hope this is corrected really soon… most upsetting since there is no way that I can see to edit my contacts!
