Folks, we're approaching 8 years on this feature request. I think it's
time to accept that it's not going to happen.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like it too. I use MailMate for my work email
and one of the reasons I like it is because of this feature, but it's
time to accept that the Mailplane folks aren't going to add this.
They've added several others in the meantime, but this one hasn't
moved in eight years.

If you only have one or two Gmail accounts, checkout
https://kiwiforgmail.com/ and maybe suggest this feature to the
developers there. Perhaps we'll have better luck with them.
