Tj, I for one like it when an application lets me know that it needs updating - for me, life is too short to have to poll around for app updates periodically, just let them tell me. If it happens to pop to the foreground at the time, I really don't mind. 99% of the time, the check is made during app startup, when the app has the focus anyway. But for something like Mailplane, which is always open, just depending on checking at startup probably isn't sufficient.
