The MTA example is the best here. If I install exim on my systems as that's what I prefer, something else that drags in sendmail (hypothetically for some tool it provides that exim doesn't), I don't want my preference of exim overwritten. These two tools (and postfix) should all have the same priority...there isn't even a sane way to give them unequal priorities that doesn't involve personal preference.
