Well, something must have been done, it started working, and I find no
trace of gcc anymore.
I did have to add this, else it won't pick the .pc files it needs:

EXTRA_BUILD_EXPORTS += PKG_CONFIG_PATH

Now at least it builds to the end. I've not tested it yet nor reviewed
the build output.
