The patch does not do the propagation of flags; my back end for Gnus does this (Gnus is a mail reader for the Emacs editor). Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on that part. The patch only deals with changing file names due to changed flags. When you have a maildir message like 1191533969.P9236Q8.myserver:2,S and you reply to it, the file will usually change its name to 1191533969.P9236Q8.myserver:2,RS although it's still the same message. For mairix to recognize this, you would have to update the database after each changed flag - the patch enables mairix to find that changed file name, so that it doesn't create a dangling symlink. Additionally, when you eventually update your database, the patch will make mairix recognize that this is still the same message and will not parse it again.
