About the CNU Clinics: All, You will notice on the 2008 schedule two clinics being hosted by Christopher Newport University. (S07-4, 22-23 March F02-10, September 13-14). These events are open to all MAISA schools, but first priority during scheduling will go to the teams in the South Region. This is due to the size of our site and our feeling that such events should be local to minimize travel for club teams. These events are intended for smaller, club teams, their officers, and new sailors from any team. The purpose is two fold. We want to better prepare un-coached club teams to meet their MAISA obligations and to better manage the teams lacking in outside support. Secondly, we want to help new sailors understand college sailing, how it operates, and to provide on the water coaching as they need it. There will be no required number of people who must be or can be sent except that a maximum of five is encouraged. However, we will appreciate knowing from the teams who sign up for the events how many sailors will be coming in advance of the event. The subjects covered will be determined according to the wishes of the participants. However, there will be a mix of inside instruction and on the water work, including a “Sample Regatta" on Sunday during which, our coaches will offer advice to participants as the races are run. Scores will be kept, but the real goal will be improvement by all. The list of topics we intend to offer, but not limited to are: Team management Team obligations to MAISA Deadlines that must not be missed How MAISA works Selecting events for your team Typical MAISA courses Boats and equipment The most often questions asked of our coaches Dealing with your school Attracting new members Tactics of sailing Strategies of sailing The Rules of sailing And other topics proposed by the participants. We will have several question and answer sessions. With our two fleets of FJs and 420s, we will be able to familiarize participants with the two classes most used in collegiate sailing. It is our hope that we may not only provide coaching and information that will be of value to participating teams, but to also improve college sailing in MAISA by having more teams better prepared to participate in MAISA events. We hope to see many of you there. But by all means, let us know what will be of the greatest benefit to you. Dan Winters, Head sailing Coach, Christopher Newport University
