If in 2008, your team would like to compete at a terrific Sailing venue, with the New York City skyline as a picture-perfect background, you may be interested in two regattas hosted by Fordham University and one co-hosted by Fordham & Columbia University on Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay.
1. APRIL 19-20: GREATER NEW YORK AREA DINGHY REGATTA - This competition began in 1948 as the Greater New York Area Dinghy Championship. It was hosted by Kings Point for 30 years and resurrected by Fordham six years ago. The name of the winning team is engraved on the original plaque from 1948. This event has always been for teams from the Greater New York City area only but with more boats than confirmed teams, this event is now open to all MAISA teams. Colgate from Upstate New York has already received a berth and it appears that two other berths will be available, so additional MAISA teams are encouraged to contact Dan Winters for a berth or up to two alternate spots. 2. SEPTEMBER 27-28: JESUIT SCHOOL INTERSECTIONAL - This situation is similar to the one above insofar as it has a history in Intercollegiate Sailing going back to 1955. After a 30-year hiatus, it was brought back in 2002 and participating teams have included: MAISA - Fordham, Georgetown, Loyola & Villanova NEISA - Fairfield, Holy Cross & Providence MCSA - John Carroll, Notre Dame & Marquette Competition has always been good but the downside is that it is tough for some teams, who have to travel a long distance, to be able to commit every year. Thus, in 2008 for the first time, this Intersectional is open to all ICSA teams. The name of the highest finishing Jesuit/Catholic school team will be added to the original Jesuit Cup and the winning team will have its name engraved on a perpetual plaque, which they will keep for one year and return for the 2009 regatta. Right now, Georgetown, Loyola & Fordham will be participating and I'm guessing that we'll have at least one team from NEISA & MCSA. However, we want to have 10 boats on the starting line so it's very possible, that as many as five - six additional teams could receive berths. Thus, all ICSA teams are encouraged to request a berth. MAISA teams should contact Dan Winters and teams from other conferences should go through their respective Graduate Secretaries. OOC teams will be advised if they have a berth immediately after the MAISA Annual Meeting on February 2. 3. OCTOBER 18-19: RAMS/LIONS BIG APPLE CLASSIC - This event was inaugurated as a Women's regatta four years ago and became a Coed competition last year. Currently, nine teams have berths and we would like to use all 10 boats. To assure that happening, we encourage three MAISA teams to contact Dan Winters. One will receive the tenth berth and two will become alternates. FYI, participants at all three regattas get to enjoy the World's Greatest Bagels and Cheesecake, and among the world's best clam chowder. If your team is seeking good competition; a great Sailing venue; terrific food, and a fun and friendly atmosphere, sign up today. The welcome mat is out!
