Notes Concerning the 2008 Draft

1. Apparently there was at least one school confused by the fact that the
"Master Order of Draft" I sent out only went down to the 33rd team. Hey, in
2002
we only had 33 teams! We now have 44, but reading and applying the "formula"
should have indicated how things will be done. In any case, I've taken the
time to redo the Master Order of the Draft to extend to 45 (We expect to add a
team this year.) That document is attached.

2. Again, if anyone has problems, please let me know. I expect questions and
I will be prepared to respond, so don't hesitate to ask. But, please, be
sure you have a legitimate question that you are unable to answer.

3. Let me again ask you all to read everything sent in the Draft Package.
Miss one thing and you can screw up your entire season.

4. Let me point out that the purpose of the draft is to distribute our
available events (approximately 124) and their available spots (approximately
855)
between the 44 teams in MAISA and to do so in a manner that matches a team's
ability with the events of an appropriate level of difficulty. The swiftest
improvement by sailors and the most satisfying competition is found between
teams of similar abilities. In particular, we want the teams who represent
MAISA in Intersectional competition to be strong representatives of the
conference.

5. We will be conducting a study following this year's draft to determine
how well this goal is being met, something I have not done since 2005. At the
time this Order of Draft was developed, we had six teams that were far above
the rest. The number of elite programs in MAISA is now closer to eight. But
the
numbers used in the Order of Draft are not what is important. How well the
Draft meets its goal is. I for one will be looking forward to seeing how the
Draft has been working. The difficulty with evaluating this data will be in
separating the good of MAISA from the ambitions of each individual team.

We will see what we shall see.
