This is an interesting question, because it explains why perl 1 is so small in relation to perl 5 where MakeMaker sprang into existence. perl 1 comes with version -4.97 of MakeMaker meaning it actually *negates code* in the core of Perl. If we were to somehow backport MakeMaker 6.12 to Perl 1, it would become much larger than the mere size of MM 6.12 + Perl 1 because of this negated code coming back into existence.
