15-odd production releases from 5.004 up, and 10-20 common platforms +
variations.
What platforms?
3 BSDs, 5-8 Linuxs, Windows 2K, XP, OS X, Solaris, a 64-bit Linux, a
64-bit BSD. Other miscellaneous ones depending on any particular current
cared issues.
Then beyond those for things that need higher compatibility there's
CentOS, VMS, another 10-20 Linuxs, Win98, Win 2003 Server, Vista, and
the list goes on and on.
And we're much more likely to get uniform coverage by testing all of
them in advance in an automated fashion than just sending it off to core
and waiting for bug reports from individuals.
Right. Testing in the core isn't a substitute for what you are proposing
either. So do both.
I agree. But lets do mine first :)
