Cheeca Lodge

Dates and location are confirmed for the championship. Tournament headquarters will be located in Islamorada, Florida, at the Cheeca Lodge, May 6-10, 2001. Islamorada is known as the sportfishing capital of the world with a myriad of marinas, dolphin-filled lagoons, and a wide variety of artisan shops. Cheeca Lodge on the Atlantic Ocean fronts 27 acres of tropical gardens with a mix of guest rooms, suites or private villas, tennis, golf, an award winning children´s program and much more.

The championship tournament anglers will be boarding their boats each morning literally "across the road" from Cheeca, where in minutes they will be fishing some of the best fishing grounds in the world.

Spouses are encouraged to attend the championship. There will be numerous social events during tournament week, with several extra optional fun activities.

The Florida Keys charter-boat fleet is first class and has experienced guides. Fishing takes place just a short distance away, with almost always good weather. The tournament committee will arrange for your boat and guide and you will fish on a different boat each of the three days of competition.

The approximate tournament registration cost will be between $1,200 and $1,500. This includes the registration fee, three days of fishing with boat and guide, angler bag and all social events.

Targeted species are: tarpon; bonefish; permit and possibly other species such as redfish, snook, etc. A point system will be used with points allocated based on the use of flies, bait, or artificial lures.

Tackle will be available for the tournament angler, or the angler may bring his/her own tackle.

The winner of each of the qualifying tournaments will be invited to participate in the ROLEX/IGFA Inshore Championship Tournament. If the first-place winner of the qualifying event cannot participate, the second-place winner will be invited.

The first and second-place winners of the championship tournament will receive an engraved ROLEX watch and trophy. There will be numerous trophies and prizes for the various categories.

The weather in May is almost perfect, with temperatures between 70° and 80°. Don´´t forget your polaroid sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen for the Florida Keys sun. A lightweight rain jacket would be a good idea in case of a shower.

All Championship Tournament events are casual, including the awards party. Sport shirts and slacks are normal for evening events. The Cheeca Lodge main dining room does require gentlemen to wear a sport coat for evening meals.

The following is the preliminary 2001 ROLEX/IGFA Championship Tournament schedule of events: Sunday, May 6 - Arrival, registration, kick-off party Monday, May 7 - 1st day of fishing, social event Tuesday, May 8 - 2nd day of fishing, social event Wednesday, May 9 - 3rd day of fishing, gala awards party Thursday, May 10 - Pack up your awards and head home

The tournament committee is planning a fun-filled schedule you will never forget. Some of the friends you make may last a lifetime.
