OK I see the point of the feature.  But can you see my point that it is
wide open to abuse particularly on a demo site.  As you say it was
surely a mistake that sebast1 'reminded' hundreds of people about this
issue they had never seen before.  Shouldn't there be some limit on the
number of people that can be reminded in this way to prevent such
mistakes?

No, It's a feature...

Ever used bugzilla? there the same is called "CC list", and one user
can add any other user to the list.

Of course this was a mistake from the sebast1 user, but you just go
there and remove yourself clicking on "Unmonitor" (and maybe tell
sebast1 to not do that again...)
