Thanks to Mr. Falk I read the article _Boxen_ in our first port of 
call, _Der kleine Pauly_; the article mentions Pausanias, Theocritus (! 
-- the Vergil connection), Livius and Suetonius as sources.
The article _caestus_ cites adds Valerius Flaccus and Statius -- so the 
noble art of boxing in Rome definitely creates epic resonances.
