David,
When I tried to get to the website you gave for the Belloc essay, I got
a screen saying that the website did not exist. I double checked the address
I typed in, and it seems to be correct.

Try copying the address from your email to the Windows or Macintosh
clipboard, then pasting it into your browser. I just tried it, and it
seemed to work fine.

If anyone's still having trouble, email me privately and I'll be happy to
send the page as an attachment.

I got in without trouble, launching the address from the email message;
but it does sometimes happen that a site I have reached before and later
reach again is temporarily unavailable for no discernible reason.
I am too much the townsman to judge, but surely Belloc is more
throughgoingly didactic than Vergil; another difference is that Belloc
(always conscious of his Frenchness) marks himself out as an outsider
both by his Roman Catholicism (the angelus), which was very much a
minority religion in England then, and by his celebration, not of the
English people, but of its predecessor in the island.

Hallo
I am interested in Virgil particularly in his Aeneid.
But I don't understand all. Is it right that he wrote his Aeneid for
Augustus? and that there are links between Augustus, Aeneas and Herkules in the
book?
But does Virgil really only want to glorify Augustus, although he lived in
the time of the civil war, and although Augustus took the land of Virgil's
family away?
Does Vrigil want to compare Cacus and Antony and Turnus?
I would be very glad if you could help me

What good treatments are there out there of the Vergilian hero? Most of
the stuff that I know about is 20 years old or older (a personal
failing). What has come out since, say, 1980 that is a "must-read" on
this topic. Thanks

Tom Heslin

That's a pretty tall order. I'd start with some of the books on Sh1irley
Warner's annotated Aeneid bibliography:

        http://classics.rutgers.edu/vergil.html

But the main thing to look at is the actual text of Virgil's poem.

A couple days ago I received the following email:

>My wife studied Latin Lyric poetry at the University of Manitoba many
>years ago and has always had a love of Vergil and Propertius. It
>occurred to me that she would LOVE a recording of someone reading these
>kinds of works. (I remember how she worked to learn how to scan the
>lines to read aloud). This stuff is some of the most beautiful ever
>created! Are there such recordings. If so, could you give me an idea of
>how to purchase some? If not, why not?

I know that there are snippets of Latin poetry online at the following:

Janet Burns, "Listening Lab: Audio Files"
http://latin.about.com/homework/latin/cs/audiofiles/index.htm

Thomas Jenkins, "Harvard Classics Prose and Poetry Recital Page"
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~classics/poetry_and_prose/poetry.html

Any other recommendations (online or otherwise)?

Can someone point me to recent discussions of similes in the Aeneid? I seem to
have misplaced my bibliography on such things.

I'm new to the internet:
would anyone be able to direct me to ideas regarding the Aeneid's reliance on
Homer?
Grateful.
