Yes, it's pretty good, like most things associated with Philip Hardie. I
provide the amazon.com url, in case you're looking for that $700 holiday
guft for someone; more usefully, they provide the whole table of contents,
which I offer below (though some names are missing somehow). Note that
several opposing articles are faced off against one another.

I found the Homer volumes by de Jong also very useful; they include a
couple of new things and some things newly translated, although I was
confused one time when a Homer volume printed most but not all of a chapter
or article I had seen elsewhere, with no sign that soemthign had been
omitted.

Hello all--

I have two questions - first, at the end of the Aeneid (line 941 in my
Oxford Latin versiion) - the word 'infelix' is there, "et iam iamque magis
cunctanem flectere sermo coeperat, infelix umero cum apparuit alto" - I am
taking 'infelix' to mean unhappy, but there is no mention of this in my
English translations. His eyes are restless, he checks his hand, and
that's it.

My second question is - are there any good books out there for learning
Latin? Or any courses here in the Toronto area? Thanks!

Lena Friesen

one answer:

read on to the next line and see the noun that infelix modifies:

...*infelix* umero cum apparuit alto
*balteus*

This is the baldric or belt of Pallas that Turnus is wearing. It is
unhappy, unlucky, ill-starred, probably even to be associated with infelix
as "infertile" since it was worn by two men killed young, and contains on
it a depiction of men killed on their wedding night.

In reply to your question about good books for studying Latin, I found
"English Grammer For Students of Latin" by Norma Goldman and Ladislas
Szymanski really useful as a referance book - it won't teach you Latin, but
it's really good if your learning for the grammer side. Good Luck!

A quick note from the listowner:

People try to spam the Virgil mailing list an average of three times _a
day_. Two or three times _a year_, one of these messages gets through. When
it does, please ignore it. If you wish to report it, please find out where
the message _originated_ and complain there. Complaining to my ISP doesn't
help with the problem. It does create more work for me. If you have
suggestions for making majordomo servers more spam-proof, please email me
privately.

I am currently working on a continuation of the Aeneid in Latin Dactylic
Hexameter. If anyone out there has attempted this task or is currently doing
the same, I would appreciate any advice you have to offer. I am about forty
lines into the project.

Quick note: the fourth edition of "Virgil in Late Antiquity, the Middle
Ages, and the Renaissance: An Online Bibliography" is now online at:

        http://virgil.org/bibliography

I think I'd like to get rid of the frames at some point; in the meantime,
though, there are a lot of new entries since the last update. Again, thanks
to all who contributed and special thanks to Otfried Lieberknecht, Helen
Conrad-O'Briain, and Gert de Ceukelaire.

A postscript to the fall's discussion of whether Augustus had Virgil
murdered: as you will recall, we decided not to talk it anymore. J.-Y.
Maleuvre has, however, asked me to mention that he has now created an
eGroups mailing list to discuss the topic at greater length. The URL, for
those who are interested, is

Hello,

I was wondering if Virgil uses comparative language in
writing the Aeneid(simile or metaphor). If so, where
in the text could I find these?

Thank you
Brenda

Virgil uses simile and metaphor pretty much in every line he wrote. Pick any
line and he is using them. The question should be which simile or metaphor
should be most revered. If you are not a reader of Virgil, I suggest
obtaining any English translation of The Aeneid, and there rhetorical devices
will be clearly seen. I do not believe you are a reader of Virgil because
these devices should fly out at you. Read him and discover his artistry.

Best,

Russell Beneke

iluvcows99,
The most notable instances of comparative language in the Aeneid are
Virgil's epic similes. These are probably what your question is most
geared towards. A couple early (and famous) examples are liber I, ll.
148-153; liber I, ll. 430-436. If you're reading the Latin, note the
standard simile introductions-- qualis, veluti, sicut, etc. Such passages
will be a good introduction. Do not go looking for comparative language
in almost every line, as someone else suggested, because it does not
exist, though it is certainly prevalent. Personification, such as Furor
impius (liber I, 294), is another type of comparative language that
speaks, in this case, at multiple levels. Hope this helps.

Frances Mayes in her book "Under The Tuscan Sun"[Broadway Books,New York
1996] writes that she consulted the "sortes", when she wondered if her
Tuscan farmhouse would ever be properly renovated:"During the Renaissance,
it was a custom to open Vergil at random and place a finger on a line that
would foretell the future or answer a burning question. In the South[of the
USA], we used to do this with the Bible. People always have had ways to
grasp for revelation: The Etruscans' haruspication, reading omens from
sacrificed animals' livers, is no stranger than the Greeks' finding
significance in the flight patterns of birds and the droppings of animals.
I open Vergil and put my finger down on "The years take all, one's wits
included." Not very encouraging."
[p.253-4]

I did not much like the book either in its matter or its style, but I was
intrigued by a modern instance of the "sortes Vergilinae" as well as the
claim that the "sortes Biblicae" was still consulted in Mayes' lifetime in
the southern states of America.

But where does the quotation "The years take all, one's wits included."
come from? I confess that I cannot locate the Latin or the source in
Virgil. Is Mayes translating from the Latin (in which case,I do wish she
had given the Latin as well) or consulting an English version? Is an
English version efficacious for the "sortes'?

Lastly, a minor & non-Virgilian query: was "copromancy" really practised by
the Greeks?

I don't know about Greek copromancy, but the Vergil quotation is from the
Eclogues, 9.51:

Omnia fert aetas, animum quoque.

Since Guy Lee in the Penguin edition renders this, "The years take all,
one's wits included," I take it Mayers had Lee's edition in hand.

Dear All,

I have a few queries about Venus' motives in the
Aeneid and any help would be appreciated (this is not
for an essay, just general classical knowledge).

Right, my questions: in Book One of the Aeneid, why
does Venus try to make Dido fall in love with Aeneas?
Jupiter has already ensured the Trojans will receive a
warm reception (c. 1.298-305), and if Aeneas stays in
Carthage, as Venus' plan implies he would, this plays
right into Juno's hands by delaying the founding of
Rome. Also, why does Venus not stop Aeneas and Dido
(in Book Four) making love which would surely delay
him further by involving him in a relationship? and
why is it left up to Jupiter to intervene (after
Iarbas' prayers) when surely it would be in Venus'
interests to send Mercury as soon as possible?

Don't feel you have to answer all of these - I know
they're convoluted - but if someone could, I'd be
really grateful, because I just can't figure out
Venus' motives.

With advance thanks,

Josh Spero.

This is meant to be both a little encouraging and a little sceptical about
the project of Continuation - which I think has been tentatively
considered, even attempted, since the Renaissance. (There is a
an excellent essay on V's own position as a continuator of Homer,
by G.B. Conte, in Proceedings of the Cambridge Philological Society, 45
(1999) p.17.) Why bother - why continue something old rather than start
something new? I can see that one might reply 'I want to expose the true
logic of the old story' and 'I comment on something old, but I have
something new to say'. There is a difficulty here: can you give effect
to the old logic and the new idea at the same time? I guess that V
resolves this difficulty. He offers a reading (possibly legitimate) of
Homer, summarised in Diomedes' speech to Latinus' envoys, in which the
Trojans must in the end win against the strife-torn Greeks. His new ideas
concern the recurrence of Greek-style strife among the Roman heirs of
Troy. We know the genius with which he puts old and new together. Can
anyone now hope to do something similar? How could we make the new idea
seem fresh, something more than a footnote? I would differ from you in
that I think we would have to begin by abandoning the Latin language, the
hexameter rhythm, even formal poetry. If there is to be an effective
continuation of the Aeneid - one day I think that there will be - it will
probably be a film and probably have a futuristic setting, allowing for a
faithful yet reinvigorated portrayal of V's characters. There should be a
great deal of scope for developing the character of Lavinia, from silence
to speech, from helplessness to crucial role and in developing the
triangle between her, Aeneas and Ascanius. I strike a sceptical - I hope
reasoned - note about continuation in Latin. I do accept that there is
something about epic which calls, even cries out, for continuation. It's
part of the fascination of epic that, despite the mighty sense of
overhanging divine providence, the heroes and anti-heroes often end in a
thoroughly ambivalent position. To my mind this is true of Homer (at
least in the Iliad), V himself, Lucan, Valerius Flaccus. Something about
the logic of polytheism behind the individual thoughts or inconvenient
deaths of the poets? Statius goes strongly for closure, of course: is
that why Dante regards him as a crypto-Christian? - With good wishes
for 2001, Martin Hughes.

Once again, my apologies for the spam that got through to the list this
morning (one of about a dozen attempts today, if you can believe it). This
seems to be happening more often, unfortunately.

As you've no doubt realized, replying to the message doesn't actually
remove you from anything -- your remove message just gets broadcast to the
group. The good news is, _your_ email address was never on the spammer's
mailing list.

So that we don't get barraged with anymore remove attempts, I'm going to
shut down the list for a day or so. The remove attempts (and everything
else) will go directly to my mailbox and I'll sort it out from there. I remain

Yours faithfully,
David Wilson-Okamura
Listowner, Mantovano
