We haven't spent much time documenting our history as we go along. We
are starting to get to an age where not everyone can remember this
history, and it would it would be useful to have some of this data for
both research and nostalgic value.

I periodically have written a Strategic Direction paper which captures
some history and looks forward. The latest is at:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/Strategic+Direction and previous
versions are linked from there.

You can get ideas about dates from the svn commits and the dates of
releases.

Raj Singh wrote a pre-cursor to Mapbuilder originally which demonstrated
use of vector rendering in a web browser.

I then took his core ideas and built the first Mapbuilder which was a
WMS Viewer built from a Web Map Context document.
It ran in IE and Firefox - on any operating system.

Mike Adair was working on something similar and joined forces very early
on. Among other things, Mike was responsible for the config.xml files
that is now core to Mapbuilder.

We then focused on WFS-T functionality, vector rendering using
wz_graphics (ie drawing a line by hundreds of <div> elements, and
transactions between the browser and server.
We were writing AJAX code before anyone knew about the power of AJAX,
before AJAX had been coined, and before Goolge made AJAX popular.
Looking back we were blazing a lot of new ground, and as happens when
you blaze ground, we made some design decisions that we would make
differently today.

Anyway, hopefully that should give you enough to fill an intro section.
