John,

A few other points:
- my involvement in MapBuilderr grew out of an application I was
developing in the late 90's called the Quicklook Swath Browser which
used similar techniques: still running (sort of) at
http://quicklook.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/ql2/en
- I'd like to echo Cameron's statement that we were using AJAX
techniques at least a year before the term was coined.
- A major event for almost all of the Open Source client libraries was
the Bird-Of-a-Feather session at FOSS4G 2006 in Lausanne, where we
agreed that collaborating on a map rendering API would be beneficial to
all of us, and that common library was to be provided by Open Layers.
It's almost a year since then and MapBuilder (as well as several other
projects) have incorporated the OL API for rendering the maps.

As for your questions,
releases:
1.0.0 - April 6(?), 2006
1.0.1 - July 19, 2006
- it has always been a client side library, so there is no Linux-only
version. We have supported both Apache/PHP and Java Servlet web servers
since very early on.
