Re debugging mapbuilder: I suggest you install the "firebug" extension to mapbuilder. It provides a console window which allows you to see each POST/GET message and the response.
There are debugging tips in the Mapbuilder wiki. I don't have access to the internet at the moment, but I think it is linked from the tutorial page.
