When IMCos met in Istanbul, a Greek admiral gave an excellent paper
on the Piri Reis map that I thought would lay the controversy to
rest. Ha! Wingnuts will be wingnuts.
Must say your review made me want to read the book. A good laugh now
and then is excellent.

Browsing the New Books shelves at our local public library, I
couldn't resist one with the title "The Puzzle of Piri Reis". Some
of the workings of this mystery story were okay, not great, but
the writer knows absolutely nothing about maps, must have read
something about the Piri Reis map and simply took off from there.
You have to read it to believe how bad his treatment of old maps
is. His victim bought a Piri Reis map. Wow! The author gives it
a value of one to two million. Hah! The author seems to think of
the map only as an art work, thinks an art museum would want it,
never mentions anything about cartographic history, map dealers,
map collectors, map collections. The one book the map owner prized
is "Encyclopedia of Ancient Phoenician Maps". I can't help but
wonder if the publisher, Avalon Books, employs an editor?
