"A. Lindenkohl in Washington" was Adolph Lindenkohl of the US Coast
Survey. He and his brother Henry were born in Hesse Cassell, in
Germany, and as young men they immigrated to the US. They joined the
Coast Survey and spent the rest of their lives there (working 50 and 59
years, respectively). They both were superb draughtsmen, mainly
associated with leadership roles in the drawing and engraving and
lithographic divisions of the Survey, but Adolph in particular also
became a major Survey scientist in what would now be called physical
oceanography and marine geology.
Adolph Lindenkohl published many of his papers in German in Petermann's
and in English in appendices to Coast Survey annual reports. But
there's no English version of the 1865 article, as it's broad survey of
published work related to the geography of the southern states. By
1865, the Survey itself was quite familiar with southern geography,
having mapped and fought with the Union forces throughout the region.
The three following Lindenkohl papers published in the annual reports
were also published in German in Petermann's.
