Hello. I know it is of interest to several on this list to be able to identify the projection of historical maps. I recently learned of a USGS publication that has a very useful algorithm designed to do exactly that (help calculate some of specific parameters such as standard parallels that, when known, can give you clues to categories of projections), using spherical coordinates of nine points on any map.
