This strikes me as an extraordinarily complex question, and I wonder if
any (remotely) definitive study would even be possible. Although the
first Latin volume was published in Cologne, a number of printers were
involved over the years. From Stephan Füssel's introduction to the
Taschen reprint edition (p. 40;
http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/classics/all/00346/facts.braun_hogenberg_cities_of_the_world.htm):
"Since no printing materials or business records have survived from this
period, the only clues to professional relationships between the
printers lie in the typographical characteristics and the different
styles of design." Perhaps Italian paper sources were used. This doesn't
answer the question, but given the number of volumes produced over such
an extended period of time, I would venture a guess that there would
have been a number of sources for the paper, which might not have even
been uniform within a single volume.

The most complete study of watermarks is David Woodward's /Catalogue
of Watermarks in Italian Printed Maps, ca. 1540-1600. /Chicago:
University of Chicago Press, 1996. Whether he covers B &H I don't
know, but he has an introduction that deals with the previous
literature as well as a three page bibliography (17-19) References to
Introduction and Catalogue. I hope this helps. I have three small
volumes of B & H as well as the six volumes in three with an intro by
R.A. Skelton published by World Publishing of Cleveland and New York
in 1966. Skimming those introductions I couldn't find anything
specific on watermarks.

the maps of Braun and Hogenberg?
