There is no study on the watermarks in Braun & Hogenberg at all. But we do
not know Rhenish paper mills who produced such heavy paper in folio format.
We know that Mercator in Duisburg bought paper for his maps from Plantijn
in Antwerpen. And Hogenberg may have gone the same way in the early years
(some later volumes are printed on paper in lower quality).
In the backyard of my brains is an information that Plantijn got his heavy
paper from mills in the French Champagne.

Davids Woodwards study is important, but in structure and establishment
too small, and based on a small selection of the material available. You
therefore better use Briquets "Dictionnaire historique des marques du
papier des leur apparition vers 1282 jusqu'en 1600"(Genève, 1907). This
book counts as the basic reference for European watermarks before 1600,
reproducing 16,000 watermarks out of a collection of 40,000 tracings made
in European archives.
