Dear Mr. Wildeman: A list / plate inventory of navigational copperplates produced by the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey now resides at the National Ocean Service, Office of the Coast Survey, U. S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 1305 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910, USA. Regards, William A. Stanley Chief Historian, NOAA (retired) From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Wildeman, Diederick Sent: Friday, October 29, 2010 3:11 AM To: Discussion group for map history Subject: [MapHist] collections copper plates of nautical charts Dear all. Until ca. the 1950-1960 many national hydrographic services produced their nautical charts using copper plates. I have noticed - for instance - that the nineteenth century Spanish plates are mentioned in: Luisa Martin-Merás (ed.) La Dirección de Trabajos Hidrográficos (1797)-1908). Madrid : Ministerio de Defensa, Sectretaria General Téchnica, 2003. I was wondering if members of this list are aware of collections of plates, where they are preserved (by the hydrographic services themselves or in other collections), and if they are mentioned in literature. All help is appreciated.
