There has not yet, as far as I know, been an announcement about a new blog from our French colleagues. 'Cartes et figures du monde: histoire de la cartographie, cultures et savoirs géographiques' http://cartogallica.hypotheses.org/?lang=fr_FR It started in August and is now well into its stride. It is run by the Commission 'histoire' of the Comité français de cartographie, and is headed with an enthusiastic editorial from its President, Jean Marc Besse: "L'histoire de la cartographie est en plein renouvellement. On assiste, à l'échelle internationale, à l'émergence de questionnements nouveaux, qui conduisent à inscrire, de manière délibérée, l'histoire de la cartographie à l'intérieur des perspectives plus vastes de l'histoire culturelle, politique et sociale des formes de visualisation et de représentation des réalités géographiques ..." It is the place to look for announcements about new publications and exhibitions, forthcoming conferences (not just in France), research projects, online cartographic scans, and so on. For example, under 'Recherche en cours', there are details of an ambitious plan to describe, identify and digitise all the portolan charts and atlases preserved in French public collections.
