Kit, You'll find a number of web-based maps on various impacts of the Japan earthquake at http://www.esri.com/services/disaster-response/japan-earthquake-tsunami-2011/index.html Although there is not a sample showing world-wide geopolitical effects, you will see maps georeferencing social media reports (twitter, youtube, ushahidi, etc.), spatio-temporal trends, nuclear impact, tsunami propagation in the Pacific, and earth movement in Japan.
