A short extract from an article in IMCoS Journal: (Tobias) Mayer´s next stop was Nuremberg (Nürnberg) where he lived from 1746/47 to 1751. Here he worked for the well-known and well-respected Homann publishing works. He produced some 30 different maps during this time as well as writing many articles on problems concerning astronomy. He was even a founding father of the Kosmographischen Gesellschaft. The Homann company was an extremely successful company executing both new and older maps and Mayer would execute around 30 maps in his time there. One result of his efforts was the so-called Mappa Critica of 1750. In his "Critical Map of Germany" Mayer exposed the weakness of many maps being used at the time. By plotting the location of selected towns and cities from two current maps being used by the publishing house including a map by the Frenchman, de L'lsle, he transposed them onto his "Mappa Critica" (fig. 3) in different colours (red and yellow). Then he plotted where he thought these places should be in green. The result was a map with slightly realigned west borders but a considerably different eastern border.
