For a fine article on the manuscript map of Lancashire (Royal MS 18 D III, f. 81b-82), see William Shannon and Michael Winstanley, "Lord Burghley's Map of Lancashire Revisited, c. 1576-1590" Imago Mundi 59.1 (2007): 24-42. The article makes a strong case (contra Gillow) for an earlier dating of the map, but it is weak (in my opinion) on the issue of Burghley's annotations to the maps. Intent on refuting Gillow's claim that the annotations indicate Burghley's interest in identifying the locations of suspected Catholics, Shannon and Winstanley make a determined effort to point out the presence of Puritans among the list of those marked. Unfortunately, in at least one case they appear to be wrong, identifying William Farington among "supporters of the Protestant settlement" (p. 37) when Farington appears in other state documents sent to Burghley as "enclyned to favor papacy" (SPD 12/240/139). This leaves exactly 2 of the 27 or so crosses that appear on the map as marking the homes of Puritans: those belonging to Hopwood and Bradshaw. I discuss this map and Burghley's atlas (Royal MS 18 D III) as a whole in a chapter of my doctoral dissertation, but I don't think it would be very useful or interesting to you since the chapter engages the material principally with respect to arguments about whether Saxton's maps helped foster a sense of nationalism in the late 16th century (in brief: I am skeptical that they had such an impact). Peter's discussion of Burghley's involvement in Saxton's mapping of the counties in vol. 3 bk.2 of The History of Cartography makes a number of new and important contributions to our understanding of these maps, particularly about their sequence.
