The classic story from my own period (16th century England) about people putting undue faith in maps is George Owen's complaint that his home county (Pembrokeshire) had been subjected to unfair military levies because Saxton had, contrary to his practice with the other Welsh counties, devoted a whole sheet to the representation of Pembrokeshire, creating the false impression that the county was larger than it really was.Eric Johnson-DeBaufre
