I think your self-description is reasonable, and probably universal. The mind/brain itself, in my view, is a mapping system, most obviously in the visual cortex . On a deeper level, the map is likely a good example of a "category of perception" or of cognition, and as such must mediate many of our activities, including ideas of sociology, history, and political tendencies. To better understand human history, we must broaden our understanding of maps. Not all the time, of course, but much of the time the map becomes my “primary reality.” I am aware that the map is a selective abstraction, but I still find myself taking the map’s representation as the reality in which I travel. This becomes something of a “double think” process, both “worlds” are valid.
